NORTON, VA – Lillian Boyd Artrip, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center Long-Term Care Facility in Norton.

Lillian was born on April 26, 1924, the second child of 11 born to Homer and Lacy Woodward Boyd of Emory, VA. At age 20, she was one of the wave of early women pioneers to join the workforce. She took part in the war effort during World War II, manufacturing shells at a plant in Bristol. While there, she was introduced to, fell in love with, and married Armond “Zip” Artrip.

Later, the couple moved to Norton where Lillian worked for a time at Jack and Jill Kindergarten and then for many years at Wise Appalachian Regional Hospital. At 68, and still eager to contribute, she completed certification as a geriatric nursing assistant and began working with Mountain Empire Older Citizens. She excelled at work there, earning the Grace Davis Award in 1994, just two years after she started. In 2001 at age 76, she was awarded the Mae French Outstanding Older Worker Award in the region for the best demonstration of loyalty, commitment, service, and kindness. She later went on to win a second place in the state of Virginia.

Lillian enjoyed being active in the community. She was a member of the First Church of God in Norton since 1954 and enjoyed participating in the Women of the Church group. She often took part in the Mountain Empire Older Citizens Walkathon to raise money for those needing assistance with heating fuel costs. Lillian loved mountain music and, for many years, could be found on Saturdays at the Country Cabin in Josephine, where she was a wonderful dancer.

She had resided at Mountain View Long-Term Care since January 2011. She was a beloved resident who enjoyed visiting with the other residents and could often be found socializing in the halls and dining room.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Armond Leland “Zip” Artrip; her brothers H.C., Tom, Jack, and Harold Boyd; and her sister, Mamie Buck. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Ginger and Carl Beverly and Debbie and Charles Wampler; her granddaughter and grandson-in-law Tiffany Beverly and Jon Edwards; and her step-grandchildren Bryan Wampler and Holly Cockran.

Lillian was loved and will be missed by all, but her family is grateful that she is at peace and rest in God’s love.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ken Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
